Wild Weather at WildWolf
Nancy snapped out of her skis and rushed to where George grappled with the hairy figure. Nancy swung her ski pole at it, scoring a hit on its side. With a human-sounding yelp the figure rolled away and jumped to its feet. Then it raced across the field and out of sight.
“George! Are you all right?” Nancy knelt next to her friend, who was still lying in the snow.
“There’s something wrong with my arm,” George said, cradling her left arm in her right. “It got sort of bent back when he . . . it . . . whatever it was jumped me.”
Nancy darted back to snap her skis on. Then she helped George up and fashioned her scarf into a sling for George’s arm. Slowly, they skied the rest of the way to the car, with George using only one pole.
Nancy drove quickly to the medical center emergency room. While George was being X-rayed, she called Detective Dashell and told him what had happened. He knew the area where they’d skied and told her he’d go right out. They both agreed that the snow should yield plenty of footprints for tracking.
George was finally released. “She has a badly sprained shoulder,” the doctor told Nancy. “But I tell you, those were nasty scratches on her back. She said she thought it was some kind of wild animal, so we might have to have her start rabies shots, just in case. We took some cultures, and we’ll be back in touch.”
Nancy stopped at the pharmacy to fill George’s prescription and then delivered her home.
When she finally got to her own house, Nancy found her answering machine full of news. She listened to the messages as she got ready for bed. Brief messages fired out from Ned, Brianda, and her Carnival coordinator about the next day’s schedule. The next message was from Bess, and she had obviously been in touch with everyone else.
“YES!” Bess’s voice yelled from the worn-out tape. “Go George! I called her first to tell her that you guys were on the late news. George holding up that major trophy, and you cheering. So cool.”
“Wait’ll you hear what wasn’t on the news,” Nancy mumbled to the answering machine.
“There’s still a lot of cleanup to do,” Bess chirped. “So they’re only holding the events that are away from the park for the first part of the day. They’re doing the polar-bear plunge—Ned’s helping with that. And they’ve set up a temporary Heat Hut near the river, so I’ll be working there. They’re also holding the ice-fishing competition, and the golf match and softball tournaments. George is third-base coach for the game.”
Nancy collapsed onto the bed. “Then in the evening,” Bess’s voice continued, “everything should be back to normal in the Park again. They’re going to do the Crystal Palace lighting and the whole deal. I talked to Brianda and she said to tell you that Markie is home, so come out to WildWolf as soon as you can.
